ANOTHER REASON TO DRINK YOUR MILK!

New Study Shows High Schoolers with Healthy Habits, Like Drinking Milk, Have Better Grades

For the more than 16 million high school students in this country, healthy habits may be the key to their school success, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.1 Top students were more likely to have healthy eating habits – including drinking at least a glass of milk every day.

Researchers surveyed a nationally-representative group of more than 15,000 high school students and found that A students were one and a half times more likely to drink at least one glass of milk each day compared to their failing peers (with mostly D’s or F’s). Drinking milk was among a number of healthy habits including starting the day with breakfast, eating vegetables at least once per day and skipping sodas and other behaviors like physical activity, that were also more likely to be part of top students’ habits.

Experts have long identified a link between healthy choices and better grades. In fact, in one review of previous research, more than 90 percent of the studies found some link between academic achievement and behaviors related to healthy eating, physical activity and other habits, and these studies suggest both healthy behaviors could directly impact grades AND good grades could directly impact healthy behaviors.

Many kids still fall short of the recommended milk each day, missing out on the 9 essential nutrients milk provides. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend children ages 2-3 get 2 servings of milk and dairy daily, children ages 4-8 get 2 1/2 servings daily and children 9 and older get 3 servings daily.2
